Central Asia festivals and holidays

The festivals and national holidays worth planning a trip around, month by month, from Navruz to the eagle hunters of Issyk-Kul.

The biggest celebration in Central Asia is Navruz on 21 March. Spring brings crafts and folklore festivals in Uzbekistan (Khiva’s Lazgi dance festival, Bukhara’s Silk and Spices, Boysun), August the eagle hunters’ festival on Issyk-Kul, and each country has its own independence day. Ramadan and the two Eids move every year.

Planning around a festival

  • Book early. Hotels in Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand fill up during their festivals, and the fast trains sell out.
  • Expect closures. On national holidays some squares are closed for concerts and parades, and museums may change their hours.
  • Navruz is celebrated in every town and village, not only at official events. Travelling in the second half of March is the easiest way to see it.
  • See the month-by-month calendar for weather and the best country for each month.
