Winter journeys

Quiet old towns, low prices and skiing in the Tien Shan.

Winter is cold but rewarding. The Silk Road cities are almost empty, hotel prices drop and, if you are lucky, snow settles on the domes of Khiva and Samarkand. In the Tien Shan, ski resorts open above Almaty, Karakol and Tashkent.

Days are short, so winter itineraries are slower, with more time indoors in museums, workshops and tea houses.
