Planning

How many days do you need in Uzbekistan?

What fits into 5, 7, 10 and 14 days, with the routes our planners actually use and the mistakes that cost time.

Plan 7 to 10 days for a first trip to Uzbekistan. A week covers the classic four cities, Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, with two nights in each of the three Silk Road towns. Ten days adds the desert fortresses near Khiva or Shakhrisabz. Five days is enough for Samarkand and Bukhara only.

5 days

Tashkent → Samarkand → Bukhara → Tashkent by high-speed train. Two nights in Samarkand, two in Bukhara, and a short time in Tashkent on arrival or departure. Khiva is too far for a five-day trip unless you add a flight, and then everything becomes rushed.

7–8 days

The classic loop. Fly from Tashkent to Urgench, spend two nights in Khiva, drive or take the train across the desert to Bukhara (two nights), then the fast train to Samarkand (two nights) and back to Tashkent. This is the route most first-time visitors take, and the one we recommend for a week.

Day by day: Uzbekistan itinerary: 7 days. As a private tour: Classic Uzbekistan in 8 days.

10–12 days

Keep the classic loop and add one or two of:

  • The desert fortresses of Khorezm from Khiva, with a night in the Ayaz Kala yurt camp.
  • Shakhrisabz, Amir Timur’s birthplace, as a day from Samarkand.
  • The Fergana Valley for silk, ceramics and bazaars.
  • Nukus and the Savitsky Museum.
  • A slower pace: three nights in Bukhara.

Day by day: Uzbekistan itinerary: 10 days. Or cross into Tajikistan for the Seven Lakes, as in our 11-day Desert Castles & Seven Lakes journey.

2 weeks or more

Two weeks lets you either go deeper into Uzbekistan, with Karakalpakstan and the Aral Sea, or combine it with a neighbour: Kyrgyzstan’s mountains and lakes, Kazakhstan’s canyons, Tajikistan’s Fann range, or Turkmenistan’s Darvaza crater via Khiva. See multi-country journeys.

Pacing mistakes to avoid

  • One night in each city. Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva each deserve two nights; the evenings and mornings are the best part.
  • Doing Khiva as a day trip from Bukhara. It is 6–7 hours each way.
  • Underestimating the Khiva–Bukhara day. It is a full travel day by road; plan nothing else.
  • Leaving trains to the last minute in spring and autumn, when the fast trains sell out.
  • Midday sightseeing in July and August. Plan the day around the heat.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough for Uzbekistan?

Yes, for the classic route of Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. With 7–8 days you can spend two nights in each of the three Silk Road cities if you fly between Tashkent and Urgench.

How many days should I spend in Samarkand?

Two nights, which gives one full day for Registan, Shah-i-Zinda, Gur-e-Amir and Bibi-Khanym. Add a third for a day trip to Shakhrisabz or the Seven Lakes.

How many days in Bukhara?

Two nights is the minimum; three if you like to wander. Bukhara’s old town is larger than Khiva’s, with sights spread over a wider area.

Can you see Uzbekistan in 5 days?

You can see Samarkand and Bukhara well in five days using the fast train from Tashkent. Adding Khiva in five days is possible only with a flight and leaves very little time.
