When to go

Best time to visit Uzbekistan: month by month

Weather, crowds, festivals and what each month is good for, from a team that lives through every season in Khiva.

The best time to visit Uzbekistan is April to May and September to October, when days are warm, nights are cool and the Silk Road cities are at their most comfortable. July and August are very hot, often above 40 °C in Khiva and Bukhara. Winter is cold but bright, quiet and cheaper.

The seasons in brief

Uzbekistan has a dry continental climate: hot summers, cold winters and short, beautiful springs and autumns. Rain is rare except in spring. The west (Khiva, Bukhara, Karakalpakstan) is desert and has the most extreme temperatures; Tashkent, Samarkand and the Fergana Valley are a little milder; the mountains east of Tashkent and south of Samarkand are cool in summer.

Spring (March–May)

The most popular season. Navruz, the Persian new year on 21 March, is celebrated with sumalak (a sweet wheat dish cooked overnight), music and festivities across the country. April brings blossom to the oases and the best temperatures for walking. By late May, afternoons in Khiva and Bukhara are already hot. Spring is the best time for the desert fortresses and the Aral Sea, before the summer heat.

Summer (June–August)

Hot, dry and long. In the desert west, afternoon temperatures often pass 40 °C in July. It is still possible to travel: start at 7:00, rest from noon to 16:00 and go out again in the evening, when the old towns are lit and lively. Summer is the season for the mountains: the Chimgan and Charvak area near Tashkent, the Nuratau range and, across the border, Tajikistan’s Seven Lakes and Fann Mountains. Melon season in Khorezm starts in late July.

Autumn (September–October)

Many travellers’ favourite. The heat breaks in September, markets fill with melons, grapes and pomegranates, and the light is soft. It is as busy as spring, especially from mid-September to mid-October, so book trains and hotels early. By late October, nights in the desert and yurt camps are cold.

Winter (November–February)

Cold, often frosty at night, but frequently sunny. Monuments stay open, and you will have Ichan-Kala or Registan almost to yourself. Pack proper winter clothing: Khiva can drop well below freezing at night in January. Some seasonal businesses, such as yurt camps and some restaurants, close. Hotel prices are lower.

Festivals and dates to know

  • Navruz, 21 March: national holiday and the biggest celebration of the year.
  • Ramadan and the two Eids move about eleven days earlier each year. Restaurants for visitors stay open; some local cafés change their hours.
  • Independence Day, 1 September: national holiday, with events in Tashkent.
  • Cultural festivals, such as Bukhara’s Silk and Spices festival and Samarkand’s Sharq Taronalari music festival, are held in some years. Dates are confirmed late; check before planning around them.

Combining Uzbekistan with its neighbours

If you add Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan’s high mountains, plan for June to September, when passes are open. If you add Turkmenistan’s Darvaza crater, spring and autumn are best. See the best time to visit Central Asia.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Uzbekistan?

May and late September to October are often the best balance of warm weather, cool evenings and long days. April is beautiful too, but more changeable.

Is it too hot to visit Uzbekistan in summer?

It is very hot, often over 40 °C in Khiva and Bukhara in July, but travel is still possible if you sightsee early in the morning and in the evening and rest at midday. Summer is ideal for the mountains.

Is Uzbekistan worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you like quiet. The monuments are open and almost empty, skies are often clear and prices are lower. Bring warm clothing, especially for Khiva and Bukhara, where nights are freezing.
