The futuristic capital · Kazakhstan
Astana travel guide
A capital built on the steppe, with landmark modern architecture.
Astana became Kazakhstan’s capital in 1997 and was largely built from scratch on the northern steppe. Its skyline is a showcase of contemporary architecture, from the Baiterek tower to Norman Foster’s pyramid-shaped Palace of Peace and Reconciliation and the tent-like Khan Shatyr.
It makes an interesting one- or two-day contrast to the old Silk Road cities.
