Penjikent travel guide

Ancient Sogdian ruins and the gateway to the Fann Mountains.

Penjikent sits in the Zarafshan valley just across the border from Samarkand. On a terrace above the modern town lie the ruins of ancient Panjakent, a Sogdian city famous for the murals found in its houses.

Nearby Sarazm is one of the earliest proto-urban settlements in Central Asia and a UNESCO site. Penjikent is also the base for the Seven Lakes.
