Photography tips for Central Asia

When to shoot the monuments, how to photograph people, and what not to photograph.

Light

Tilework glows in low sun. Plan for sunrise at the Registan, late afternoon on Khiva’s walls and blue hour when the monuments are lit. In summer, midday light is harsh; rest and shoot early and late.

People

Ask first, smile, and show people the result. Most will agree; some will ask you to send the photo. Bazaars and craft workshops are wonderful places for portraits.

Fees

Some museums and monuments charge a small fee for cameras. Keep some small notes handy.

Restrictions

Do not photograph military sites, border posts, police or airports. Drones need permits in several countries. In Turkmenistan, ask your guide before photographing government buildings.
