Travel insurance for Central Asia

What your policy should cover, especially for mountains, trekking and remote areas.

Why it matters

Medical care in Central Asia is good in major cities and limited in remote areas. Evacuation from the Pamirs or a mountain valley can be complicated and expensive. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for every trip.

What to look for

  • Medical treatment and emergency evacuation
  • Cover for the altitude you will reach (some policies stop at 3,000 or 4,000 m)
  • Trekking and horse riding, if you plan to do them
  • Trip cancellation and curtailment
  • Baggage and personal belongings

Keep the details handy

Carry your policy number and the insurer’s 24-hour emergency phone number, and share them with your guide at the start of the trip.
