The silk town · Uzbekistan

Margilan travel guide

Hand-woven ikat, from silkworm cocoon to finished cloth.

Margilan has been a silk town for centuries. In its workshops you can follow the whole process: boiling cocoons, reeling thread, tying and dyeing the patterns, and weaving atlas (pure silk) and adras (silk and cotton) ikat on hand looms.

It is the best place in Uzbekistan to buy silk directly from the people who make it.
