Khiva in one or two days

Hour-by-hour plans for one day, two days and three days in Khiva, timed around the heat, the crowds and the light.

With one day in Khiva, walk Ichan-Kala from the west gate to the east gate, keep the museums for midday and climb the walls for sunset. With two days, add the desert fortresses of Ayaz Kala and Toprak Kala. A third day allows a night in a yurt camp or a trip to Nukus.

Before you start

Khiva’s old town is small, so the challenge is not distance but timing. Tour groups arrive by mid-morning and leave by late afternoon; from May to September the midday heat is serious. The plans below put the open-air sights at the start and end of the day and the indoor ones in the middle.

Buy the combined Ichan-Kala ticket at the west gate when you first enter. See tickets and opening hours.

One day in Khiva

TimeWhat to do
7:00Walk in through the west gate (Ota Darvoza) while the lanes are empty. Kalta Minor in soft morning light.
7:30Climb the Islam Khoja minaret before the heat and the queue.
8:30Breakfast at your guesthouse or a café on the main street.
9:30Kunya-Ark: summer mosque, throne courtyard, mint.
11:00Juma Mosque, cool and dark among its wooden columns.
12:00Tosh-Hovli Palace and its tiled harem courtyard.
13:00Lunch: try shivit oshi and tukhum barak (see the Khiva food guide).
14:30Museums in the madrasahs, or a rest in the shade. In summer, rest.
16:00Pahlavon Mahmud mausoleum, then the Allakuli Khan caravanserai and the bazaar outside the east gate.
17:30Kunya-Ark bastion or the northern ramparts for sunset.
After darkWalk the lit main street. Day groups have gone and local families come out.

In winter the sun sets around 17:00, so move everything about 90 minutes earlier and keep the minaret for midday, when it is warmest.

Two days in Khiva

Day 1 as above.

Day 2: the desert fortresses. Leave Khiva at about 8:00, cross the Amu Darya and drive to Kyzyl Kala and Toprak Kala. At midday, have lunch in the yurt camp below Ayaz Kala, then climb to the hilltop fortress in the afternoon. You are back in Khiva by late afternoon for a second, slower evening. Details on the desert fortresses page and the day tour.

If you would rather not leave town, use day 2 for what day 1 skipped: the Muhammad Rakhim Khan and Islam Khoja museums, the outer town and the Nurullaboy Palace, a wood-carving or carpet workshop, and the quiet southern lanes near the Tosh Darvoza.

Three days in Khiva

Choose one of these for day 3:

  • A night in the desert. Stay in the yurt camp at Ayaz Kala on day 2 and watch sunset and sunrise over the Kyzylkum, then return to Khiva or continue north.
  • Nukus and the Savitsky Museum. About three hours by road, passing the fortresses on the way. Better as an overnight trip: see Karakalpakstan.
  • Across the border to Kunya-Urgench. The old capital of Khorezm in Turkmenistan, a short drive beyond the Shavat–Dashoguz border. You need a Turkmen visa arranged in advance. See Kunya-Urgench.
  • A slow day in Khiva. A cooking session, a long lunch, and the walls at sunrise.

Where Khiva fits in a longer trip

Most travellers do Uzbekistan as a loop: fly from Tashkent to Urgench, spend two nights in Khiva, drive or take the train to Bukhara, then the fast train to Samarkand and Tashkent. Khiva works best at the start of that loop, because the Tashkent–Urgench flight saves a long day, and Khiva to Bukhara by road is a good transit day. Frequently asked questions

Is one day in Khiva enough?

One day is enough to see the main monuments of Ichan-Kala if you start early. Staying one night, ideally two, gives you the sunset from the walls and the quiet old town after dark, which many travellers remember most.

Can you do Khiva as a day trip from Bukhara?

It is possible but not recommended. Khiva is about 450 km and 6–7 hours by road from Bukhara, so a same-day return leaves only a few hours in the old town. Spend at least one night.

What is the best order, Khiva first or last?

Usually first. Fly from Tashkent to Urgench, see Khiva, then travel east to Bukhara and Samarkand. The fast trains between Samarkand and Tashkent make the end of the trip easy.
